As more childcare centers across Oregon open and summer school and youth programs launch, parents are looking for protection against viruses that kids like. Here are face masks in small sizes for children older than 2:

Disney has donated $1 million to the medical community through MedShare from sales of its popular Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars character-theme face masks.

The iconic smiles of Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Stitch and Marie brighten the 5-inch-wide cloth coverings in one of several sets that can be preordered.

Mask are also available in medium and large sizes (see measuring chart). There is free shipping on orders of $75 or more with the code SHIPMAGIC.

Face coverings are to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus and should be made based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for non-medical-grade masks. Most have three soft and breathable cotton layers and elastic, over-the-ear straps.

CDC guidelines underscore that parents do not need to buy surgical masks or N95 respirator masks. Those kinds of masks should be left for hospital staff and first responders, or essential workers who must be interacting with the public on a regular basis to perform their work duties.

Protective coverings over mouths and noses prevent an uncovered sneeze or cough from spreading into the air and to others.

Pediatrician Dr. Ray Fabius told Kindercare parents that “most kids can’t help but touch their faces with unclean hands often. A mask would be helpful if [children older than two] can manage it and want to wear it. If not, washing hands is often your best defense.”

Fabius suggests making wearing a mask less strange, awkward or uncomfortable by first practicing wearing one around the house and playing games. Point out to kids that firefighters, doctors, nurses, dentists and superheroes wear masks to protect people.

Old Navy posted on Twitter that “masks are the new capes.”

Children’s masks are about 5.75 inches wide by 3 inches high while adult masks are typically 7.5 inches long and 3.5 inches tall. None is made to be used on children under age 2 or anyone who has trouble breathing.

Here are other companies that shifted from making clothing to creating face masks for children and adults. Several support health efforts and people affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
